2024, Graphite on radish paper, 11”x8”

In this series of drawings on radish paper, I earnestly recreate images found in the family archive. These images are reproduced and transferred multiple times, ending up as poor images that reflect my poor memory. Carefully rubbing graphite to fragile radish papers, I think about the dehydration process as an act of preservation as well as a metaphor for aging.

This drawing of my grandparents and my father is done a month after my grandfather’s death. Seeing his body during the funeral process for the one last time, all shrunken and dehydrated, prompted me to draw him in my radish paper. Similarly fragile and dehydrated, these papers reflect the fragility of life and my attempt and failure to preserve familial memories.
