Loaves of Memory
2023-24, Inkjet print on bread, paper, and fabric doilies
Through printed loaves, I explore the potential of bread as a means to bring up and share family memories. Bread, a staple food that promises sustenance, becomes a ground to hold special memories. I sourced photos of birthdays from the family archive and transferred them to loaves of bread. Examining the abundance of birthday celebration photos in the archive, I wanted to bring the special ritual of birthdays with cakes, a delicacy often shared, to the daily ritual of eating bread.
By unearthing these images by hand, I propose an alternative way of remembering these moments. Some loaves are handmade, while others come from supermarket aisles.
